Name:  Steve Potter

Graduation:  1987

Position: Midfielder

Present Position: Financial Advisor – Bernstein Global Wealth Management

Present Location:  Leesburg, Virginia

Soccer Involvement: since graduation:

Played professionally in the old American Professional Soccer League (APSL) with the Washington Diplomats, and the Boston Bolts.  I played in Boston with Greg Kenney, former PSU goalkeeper.  Also played for the Richmond Kickers in the A-League. Played for a few years on club teams in Northern Virginia, but my involvement now is almost exclusively coaching my children on teams in the Loudoun Youth Soccer Association.

Favorite Penn State Soccer Memory:

Too many to pick out one.  I enjoyed my college soccer experience immensely, especially being able to play for Coach Bahr.

Most Memorable game you were involved in:

1985 vs. #1 ranked Evansville for a chance to go to the final four, we lost 1-0.
1986 vs. Akron for a chance to go to the final four, we lost in penalty kicks.
1984 at Connecticut, a 2-1 win.
1986 at Connecticut, a 3-3 tie.

Professionally:

1988 vs. Fort Lauderdale Strikers for APSL Championship.  After each team won 1 game, we lost in the mini-game playoff.

1988 vs. Miami, got to play against Ozzie Ardiles, former captain of the 1978 and 1982 Argentinean World Cup teams.

1988 vs. El Salvador at RFK stadium in Washington, DC.  The one game I played representing the United States.

Advice to current and future Penn State players:

Make the most of your college playing experience, because you won’t find anything like it after college.  Be sure to prioritize academics, this is what will offer you the best chance of success after school.
